New Zealand- Diverse workplaces are “more productive”

‘Tis the season of workplace vibrancy in New Zealand this week with two major summits promoting gender, age and racial diversity to boost creativity and improve the bottom line of forward thinking businesses.

Both the Diversity Summit 2016 in Auckland, and Diversity in Action Summit in Wellington are promoting the idea that diverse workplaces are more creative, productive and profitable.

According to Diversity in Action Summit’s website, “gender diversity is vital to any workplace. Not just because it’s a worthy goal; it simply makes bottom-line business sense”.

Similarly, Diversity Summit 2016’s site boasts the opportunity to “meet the leaders of forward-thinking New Zealand businesses maximising the benefits of diversity platforms”.

Both summits are backing up their claims with a recent study by McKinsey & Company called Why Diversity Matters, which claims that “latest research finds that companies in the top quartile for gender or racial and ethnic diversity are more likely to have financial returns above their national industry medians”.

For the study, McKinsey & Company examined 366 public companies across a range of industries in Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In this research they looked at metrics such as financial results and the composition of top management and boards.

While the study makes some lofty claims, the researchers include what seems to be a disclaimer, that “while correlation does not equal causation (greater gender and ethnic diversity in corporate leadership doesn’t automatically translate into more profit), the correlation does indicate [editor’s emphasis] that when companies commit themselves to diverse leadership, they are more successful.

Logic dictates that diversity really means less white males, and an article published this week on scoop.co.nz about the Diversity in Action Summit included some passages that imply exactly that:

-In New Zealand, only 13 per cent of engineers are women. Only 6 per cent are Maori, and only 2 per cent Pasifika. About 13 per cent are Asian. 

In other words, there are too many white men in engineering. This of course is despite the fact that they naturally gravitate towards this profession, the result of which is called Western Civilisation.

-We need to make sure we’re tapping the whole pool of people who could be engineers, not just those who look like the engineers of the past.

The white male engineers of the past to be exact, who built everything we rely upon today. There would not be a summit without them.

-research [about engineering in NZ] suggests there are a number of barriers to increasing diversity, including non-inclusive workplace cultures, a lack of challenging part-time or flexible work and gender pay gaps.

Non inclusive workplace cultures of racist white men to be precise. Never mind the fact that they are probably fathers who are working 50 hours plus per week to get the job completed within tight deadlines and profit margins, which would be completely blown if their positions were ‘part time or flexible’. Better dock their pay anyhow.

all assessors that IPENZ employs in-house will receive unconscious bias training. “The purpose of unconscious bias training is to develop awareness of biases that you don’t even know you have. It’s about creating a level playing field for everyone.”

In other words they are going to make white men aware of their genetic racism.

The presenters at Diversity Summit 2016 are an international line up, including leading keynote speaker Lisa Coleman, who is Cheif Diversity Officer & Special Assistant to the President of Harvard University. Her talk is called ‘Unconscious Bias and Inclusive Leadership”.

NZ migration spurs biggest-ever population increase

New Zealand has had it’s biggest ever annual population increase, with figures doubling on the previous year.

The population grew by 97,000 people in the year to June 30, making the total population approx 4.7 million.

New Zealanders returning home comprised a quarter of the influx, with India, China, the Philippines and the United Kingdom dominating the rest.

Statistics New Zealand says there are still more New Zealand citizens leaving, than arriving.

They also estimate that by the year 2021, 41% of New Zealanders will be of mixed ethnicity.

Some politicians have been questioning why New Zealand needs to bring in so many people, when there is a 5.7 percent unemployment rate.

New Zealand First deputy leader Ron Mark says the government has failed to train the many thousands of unemployed to fill the work force, which has led to an open door immigration policy.

“The government has to turn the tap off or down, but they’ve created a mess they have no way out of.

“You can’t bring in more and more people and not accept you’re going to generate more stress on infrastructure and more need for building,” Mr Mark said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, lobbyists such as Ravindran Annamalai, president of the Wellington Multicultural council, are holding ‘diversity conferences‘ to promote their view that the biggest issue for new migrants is the lack of voice within city councils across the country.

What the fuck is this; like, seriously, what is it?

I’ve grown up my whole life surrounded by these branded abominations, but never consciously asked myself that simple question.

For those of you outside of Australasia it’s called a dairy; otherwise known as a corner store, or 7-11 in other parts of the West.

But from the West these phenomena are not.

What we have here folks is A-grade Indian styling; a mix of their naturally gaudy aesthetic, and an “its not my country so I  don’t give a fuck” attitude.

What is sad is that beneath the core-flute mask of star bursts and dodgy discounts is quite often a quaint piece of Kiwi architecture from yesteryear; that minimal, boxy, large windowed store-front reminiscent of a rapidly disappearing era.

Dairies used to be salt-of-the-earth places where you went to get your cream and butter; they were owned by European New Zealanders and had a kind of homely feel. These days they are dishevelled smut-merchants peddling various combinations of sugar and other cancer causing toxins.

Perhaps the biggest defining feature of the Indian ghetto-dairy is the complete covering up of display windows; it gives the effect of a suffocating person with a plastic bag over their head, or a prisoner blindfolded. It’s literally like the shop can’t see or breathe.

This is a metaphor for the West.

My original question was “what is this?”

Well, it’s literally the third world operating in the first world, and covering it over. The integrity of the building has been completely obscured- and lowered- by another culture’s aesthetic.

This is what happens as the West diversities.

It’s the harbinger of the World Ghetto.

NZ Asians at risk of exploitation – study

Last week in New Zealand a report was released by the Families Commission that focused on how families from different ethnicities were faring.

It is worth mentioning here that The Family Commission’s director of research is an Indian woman named Vasantha Krishnan and the principle advisor for the report is called Bev Hong.

The report found that Asian families with younger children appear to be more vulnerable to exploitation in terms of money, housing and hours of work and pay.

This is interesting, as minorities often employ their own people- which is likely where the exploitation is coming from– indicating that this is unlikely a problem in the environment at large.

The report also found that Asians in New Zealand are more  likey to have identity issues. On July 22nd Radio New Zealand posted an article about the report that included quotes from Xiaoying Fu who moved to New Zealand from China 20 years ago and is standing for a local Board in this year’s local election.

“I’ve been here for nearly 20 years and in my heart I felt I am a New Zealander right? But based on my face people always say, you know, ‘you are Chinese’ so that is why I didn’t even bother to give myself an English name”.

It is unlikely that a single European has ever lived in China for 20 years and then proclaimed that in their heart they are Chinese, and if there ever has been I’m sure the locals would have laughed in their face.

“Some people probably try to mingle with the mainstream and probably sometimes [they’re] really confused… ‘who I am’, you know, ‘what’s the culture I should take?'”

Asians are notorious for forming their own communities within the broader one, with whole suburbs and areas of commerce becoming dominated by them. There doesn’t appear to be too much confusion amongst them with respect to their identities.

The report’s principal advisor Bev Hong was quoted saying:

“We are becoming one of the most super diverse countries there is in the world and so we’ve got a lot of opportunities to both learn, adapt and grow.”

That’s fine, though I think that China should be the next country for diversification, so that lots of learning, adapting and growing can happen there too.

The report found that Maori families were faring relatively well and European families with young children, meanwhile, were generally faring well.

In 2013 New Zealand’s Asian population sat at 12% and is expected to grow by 10% in the next 20 years.
